On Friday, December 16, a senior police officer informed the media that three people, two from Nigeria and one from Ghana, had been detained in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, on suspicion of participating in cybercrime and possession of a fake passport bearing the name of prominent Indian actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Based on a former Army colonel's FIR that he was defrauded of Rs. 1.81 crores, the three suspects, Adwin Collines from Ghana, Eke Uferemvukwe and Okoloi Damion from Nigeria, have all been arrested as a result of the police investigation. The police also found several bundles of bogus US dollar and British pound bills, estimated to have a value of more than Rs. 10.76 crores.
Authorities discovered the counterfeit Aishwarya Rai passport while looking through three foreigners' computers and laptops. Likewise, during the investigation, police also found false passports and visas. Officials also confiscated six mobile phones, printers, laptops, 11 SIM cards, and a few other gadgets throughout their investigation. According to police sources, the alleged cybercriminals and a small number of their associates have engaged in several fraudulent operations, including lottery fraud and cheating on users of social media sites, dating apps, and matrimony websites. The group had previously conned a retired Army colonel by convincing him to purchase herbs for cancer treatment.
In the meantime, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's most recent acting appearance was in Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan: 1, which Lyca Productions, in collaboration with Madras Talkies, made. The epic historical action drama movie was a huge hit, earning more than 500 crores at the box office. The film finished with a tease for the sequel, Ponniyin Selvan: 2. The sequel is now in the post-production phase and is scheduled for a summer 2023 release, where Aishwarya Rai will reprise her roles as Nandini and Mandakini Devi.
